LORD OF THE FLIES
By William Golding
1. What drew you to this book? What did you expect and/or hope to experience through reading it?
¤ I'd say what drew me to this book was the fact that I had friends who read it and also I like the genre of the book. I thought it looked interesting and gave it a shot.
2. What kept you reading past the first ten pages?
¤ What kept me reading past the first ten pages was the fact that I had to finish the book for this assignment. I also kept reading to understand a little better about the intro.
3. Describe your reading habits
¤ i wouldn't say I really have any specific reading habits. I am somewhat of a slow reader and do move my lips when I read silently if this qualifies as a reading habit.
1. Describe the plot of the novel
¤ In this story a group of boys get stuck on an island and they must survive. There are no adults on the island and are forced to wait for rescue even though they werent sure if anybody even knew they where there. They elect a leader and begin to adapt by hunting, bulding huts, and forming rescue fires. They loose there sense of humanity and kill each other.
2. Describe the theme of the novel
¤ Id say the theme of the novel is to be careful who you trust and to never give up. For instance when the character Jack turns on Ralph he almost kills him even though Ralph appointed him huntet. Then Ralph fights for his life until he sees the officer.
3. Describe the authors tone
¤ I think the authors tone is both honest and negative. He shows the boys being human and civilized to being a type of animal where they kill each other.
4. Describe ten literary elements I observerd that helped me understandm
similie-"the sandy edge of the pool loomed up like a hillside."(pg13)
symbol- the conch is a symbol, the beast is a symbol of what is inside each boy.
personification-"then he lept back on the terrace, pulled off his shirt, and stood there among the skull-like coconuts (pg 10)
metaphor
hyperbole
foreshadowing-when the young boy mentions a snake like beast this foreshadows sone problems that will cone later
mood-I felt sad when the boys killed simon thinking he was the beast.
1. Describe examples of indirect and direct characterization
¤ an example of indirect characterizatiom would be how the author decribes Ralph through his actions like being a leader and what he thinks.Another example of this would be how he describes simon through the fact the fact that he works hard.
¤An example of direct characterization would be piggy. The author strait up tells you his features. Another example of this would be Maurice. The author tells you in the beginning he has red hair and freckles.
2. Does the authors sintax or diction change when describing characters?
¤ I dont think the authors diction or sintax changes however I suppose he does use specific words for each character.
3. Is the protagonist static or dynamic?
¤The protagonist is definitely dynamic. He starts off so confident abd sure of himself but after staying on the island for a while and having to go through some external and internal conflicts he changes over time.
4. After reading the story did you feel like you met the character?
¤After reading this story I can say I somewhat know the character. After seeing the conficts he's gone through I definitely feel bad for him. I got tp know some of the characters that died. Overall ot was a pretty interesting book.
